New Zealand Clinch Opening Thriller Against England

England's netball team narrowly fell short in their first international match since February, losing 58-61 to New Zealand at London's Copper Box Arena. The second-ranked Silver Ferns showcased their composure in critical moments to secure the win in the opening clash of their three-match series.

Despite both teams committing 15 turnovers, New Zealand's precision proved decisive. England initially capitalized on home support, building an early advantage before the visitors leveled at 15-14 through a buzzer-beating first-quarter goal. By halftime, the Silver Ferns extended their lead to 33-30, driven by goal shooter Grace Nweke's commanding performance and contributions from sisters Kate and Georgia Heffernan.

"The margins were microscopic," England coach Jess Thirlby remarked. "We need sharper execution in pivotal moments, but there's immediate opportunity to respond in Game Two."

England rallied in the third quarter to draw level at 47-47, fueled by defensive standout Jaz Brown’s impactful debut. However, New Zealand’s fourth-quarter resurgence sealed the win, even as England introduced Eleanor Cardwell – playing her first match since recovering from a career-threatening knee injury.

The series continues on Sunday at the Copper Box before concluding in Manchester on Wednesday. England will also face Jamaica in December as part of their preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
