Sonny Baker's England debut got off to a rocky start as the young fast bowler was thrashed for 76 runs from a wicketless seven overs against South Africa in the first ODI at Headingley. The 22-year-old Hampshire seamer was given a baptism by fire, with Proteas opener Aiden Markram taking him apart for 56 runs from his first four overs.
Baker's first spell was particularly brutal, with Markram creaming 12 fours and two sixes off his bowling. However, despite the expensive figures, Baker showed character and determination, earning praise from his captain Harry Brook and the opposing team.
"The way Baker gave 100 per cent was awesome to see," Brook said. "That's what we ask for from our bowlers." Markram added: "There has been some really good talk about him and his ability. If he has got it on a string, he will be really good bowler for sure."
Baker's talent and ability to move the ball at high pace should help him rebound from this tough start. His character was also on display during a successful Hundred stint with Manchester Originals last month, where he impressed against some of the game's leading lights.
Despite a difficult debut, Baker will look to bounce back in the second ODI at Lord's on Thursday. With his ability and character, he has the potential to become a valuable asset for England in the future.
