New Age Restrictions Target Underage Access to Explicit Content

Starting July 25, 2025, adult websites accessible in the UK must implement rigorous age verification measures to block under-18 users. The move, announced by media regulator Ofcom, aims to align online pornography safeguards with existing protections for physical adult-oriented services like gambling and alcohol sales.

Confirmed Compliant Platforms

Ofcom has publicly identified 13 platforms that have agreed to adopt verification systems by the deadline:

  • PornHub
  • BoyfriendTV
  • Cam4
  • FrolicMe
  • inxxx
  • Jerkmate
  • LiveHDCams
  • MyDirtyHobby
  • RedTube
  • Streamate
  • Stripchat
  • Tube8
  • YouPorn

While these sites represent a cross-section of popular platforms, Ofcom emphasized that all providers hosting explicit content—including unnamed services like XHamster and XVideos—must comply. Non-compliant sites risk fines up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue, along with potential access restrictions via court orders.

Verification Methods and Privacy Concerns

Approved age-checking options range from document uploads (e.g., passports) to facial recognition scans and mobile carrier verification. Other methods include credit card validation, email-based age estimation, and open banking checks using financial records. Lina Ghazal of Verifymy, a safety tech firm, noted: "The process can be as simple as submitting an email address, delivering results within seconds without compromising privacy."

Regulatory Justification

Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom’s Online Safety Director, stated: "For too long, children have been one click away from harmful content. These rules bring digital protections in line with real-world standards while preserving access for adults." The regulator confirmed many platforms have already adopted checks, though others remain under scrutiny as the deadline approaches.

The policy applies broadly to any service hosting explicit material, including social media and gaming platforms. Users may encounter varied verification processes depending on the site’s chosen method, all required to meet Ofcom’s "highly effective" accuracy standard.
