In just two years, Sparks Boxing Academy has redefined Uganda’s professional boxing landscape, emerging as a hub for talent that blends skill, dedication, and charisma. Founded by Head Coach Herbert “Skilz” Kalungi, the academy’s mission extends beyond the ring, aiming to uplift underprivileged youth through sport while ensuring their educational futures are secured. Its commitment to social change is evident in initiatives like charity boxing events, which help cover school fees for aspiring fighters.
The academy’s rapid ascent has drawn attention, particularly its ability to sustain fighters with comprehensive training, welfare, and academic support. This enigma was recently solved as social media revealed the driving force behind Sparks’ success: Mr. Opio, the founder of Inspired Brands. His company, which encompasses ventures like Inspired Brands Promotion, Inspired Brands Boxing Management, Inspired Saloon, Inspired Hotel, and Inspired Foods, has provided the financial backbone and resources necessary for the academy’s expansion.
Sparks has already launched several standout fighters into the spotlight. Bob Turyatemba, the Welterweight national champion with a 12-0 record (7 KOs), holds the #3 rank in Uganda and #158 globally. Henry Oteba, a Lightweight contender, boasts 8 wins (5 KOs) in 9 fights, ranking #3 in Uganda and #428 worldwide. At just 16, Aaron “Da Goat” Ouma has secured 3 KOs in 4 bouts, while Douglas “The Hitman” Kalule, a power puncher, has 4 KOs in 6 fights. Isaac Kamoga, the academy’s captain, has 6 wins (4 KOs) in 7 matches, ranking #11 in Uganda. Others like Fahad Lwanga and Comein Ssembatya are also gaining recognition, solidifying Sparks’ reputation as a talent incubator.
Mr. Opio’s dedication to nurturing young potential has been pivotal. Alongside Coach Kalungi’s leadership, his investment has positioned Sparks as a beacon for future African and global champions, proving that with the right support, boxing can be a vehicle for both athletic excellence and societal upliftment.
