US Open 2025: Day of Qualifying Washed Out by Rain

The US Open 2025 encountered significant disruption on Wednesday as persistent rain led to the cancellation of almost all the second-round qualifying matches scheduled for the day at Flushing Meadows.

Organizers made the difficult decision mid-afternoon, approximately 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT), to abandon the vast majority of the 64 scheduled matches. Only a small number, totaling 14, were successfully completed before the weather conditions became too severe. This strategic move effectively wiped out a substantial portion of the qualifying action planned for Wednesday.

Despite the setbacks for the singles qualifiers, the schedule for the mixed doubles remains unaffected. The semi-finals and final of the revamped event are safeguarded by the roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The semi-final match featuring Great Britain's number one, Jack Draper, and American Jessica Pegula is set to begin at 19:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Thursday.

The weather forecast for the remainder of Wednesday indicated continued showers before drier conditions are expected on Thursday. However, the cancellation is unlikely to impact the progression of the main draw, which will commence on Sunday.

British Qualifiers Affected

Several British players who manage the challenging qualifying process found their Wednesday progress hampered. Jodie Burrage, aiming for a third consecutive deep run in New York, was trailing 5-3 against Dutch opponent Arantxa Rus after just 41 minutes of play against the clock.

Jay Clarke also fell short, losing a service game to French top seed Arthur Cazaux in his encounter. Other British contenders like Billy Harris, Francesca Jones, Harriet Dart, and Oliver Crawford did not even manage to take to the court on Wednesday afternoon.

The three remaining rounds of qualifying still have sufficient time to play out, ensuring that the field for the singles main draws will be finalized before the tournament reaches its climax later in the week.

The US Open remains the final Grand Slam event for the 2025 tennis season.
