Tragic Week: Over 80 Killed in Eastern DRC by Suspected ADF Rebels

The death toll in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surged, with over 80 people killed in one week by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels. This series of brutal attacks has once again highlighted the severe instability in the region.

Details of the Attacks

On Friday night, the villages of Masala, Mapasana, and Mahini in North Kivu province were attacked. Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay, an army spokesman, confirmed that ADF rebels were responsible. The ADF, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, frequently conducts attacks in the area, adding to the chaos created by numerous militant groups.

Series of Assaults

The ADF is believed to be behind multiple assaults over the past week. One of the deadliest attacks occurred in Masawu village, resulting in 17 fatalities. Additionally, five bodies were found in Kabweli and Mamulese, while six were recovered from a river in Mununze. These incidents bring the total death count to over 80.

Community Impact

During Friday’s attacks, armed men used guns and machetes, causing significant destruction. A local health center was set ablaze, and nine people were injured. EU foreign affairs spokeswoman Nabila Massrali emphasized the urgent need for a political solution to address the region’s instability.

Urgent Need for Action

Former North Kivu governor Julien Paluku urged the national government to take more decisive action to address the insecurity. The government has yet to comment on the recent attacks, and residents feel increasingly abandoned amid the escalating violence.

In conclusion , the situation in eastern DRC remains dire as ADF attacks continue to claim lives and disrupt communities. Immediate efforts are needed to restore stability and protect civilians from further harm.
