Aiming to address the glaring deficiencies in healthcare and education, a National Unity Platform (NUP) member, Mercy Alupo, has officially declared her bid for the Bukedea Woman MP seat. This move places her in direct competition with the current seat holder, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, in the upcoming general elections.
Speaking to the press after her announcement, Alupo highlighted the urgent need for change, citing the distressing state of health and education in Bukedea as her driving force. "Bukedea is grappling with serious gaps in healthcare and education," she stated, "I believe I am the right person with the passion and commitment to advocate for meaningful change."
Alupo, a former National Youth League treasurer under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), also served as Guild Prime Minister at Kyambogo University and led the Teso Students Association. She believes her leadership and activism background has set her up for this challenge.
"For those seeing me for the first time," Alupo asserted, "I am not a political novice."
When asked about contesting against Speaker Among, Alupo acknowledged the risks but expressed faith in the power of the people. "We have seen what happens during elections, but power belongs to the people. I'm emotionally ready for anything that comes my way," she said.
Alupo also criticized the current leadership, stating that many leaders have become disconnected from the people. "It's time for young, energetic, and people-focused leadership to take over," she added.
With her declaration, the stage is set for a high-stakes race in Bukedea, a politically sensitive district. Represented by one of the most powerful figures in Uganda's Parliament, this race promises to be a significant event in the country's political landscape.
