Former WBC Super-Welterweight Champion Sergio Mora has shunned suggestions that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis should be included in his pound-for-pound rankings, claiming that the undefeated power-puncher is more focused on making money.
Davis knocked out Ryan Garcia in one of the most memorable performances of 2023 back in April, but is yet to return to the ring since following a stint in prison.
Still, with a record of 27 knockouts from 29 wins and triumph over Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios and Isaac Cruz, many fans and fellow fighters include him in their pound-for-pound rankings, most notably Naoya Inoue.
Some were surprised then when Mora praised the ‘next generation’ of fighters who wanted to fight the best, naming Devin Haney, Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, Shakur Stevenson and Garcia but skipping ‘Tank.’
He later said that the Baltimore native’s age was a factor but, perhaps more importantly, that he wasn’t ‘chasing legacy.
Davis is expected to stick around at lightweight for the time-being and challenge for any of the belts in the now fragmented division. As WBA Regular Champion, he could be elevated to full champion or made to fight for the title.
He has also indicated that he could be ready and willing to make the jump to super-lightweight again in the near future, perhaps to face WBC Champion Devin Haney.
