Senior One Student Shot Dead by UWA Rangers in Mt Elgon Park

A tragic incident has occurred in Uganda’s Mt Elgon National Park, where a Senior One student was allegedly shot dead by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. The shooting has intensified the already strained relations between the local community and UWA.

The Incident

Markos Kipsang, a 15-year-old student at Kapkworos Secondary School, was shot in the head while cutting grass for his family’s livestock. The incident took place in the Bukwo District. According to police spokesperson Fredrick Chesang, the boy was with a friend who escaped unhurt.

Immediate Reactions

The local community reacted with a peaceful protest against the shooting. They have been in conflict with UWA over grazing rights in the park. The police have launched an investigation to identify the shooter. The incident was reported to the area LC3 chairperson, James Sangayaya, who then informed the police.

Police and Community Statements

Mr. Chesang emphasized that if a UWA ranger is found responsible, it would be a severe violation, as they should have arrested the boy instead of using lethal force. The community members expressed their anger and sadness, describing the act as terrorism.

UWA’s Position

UWA’s chief warden of Mt. Elgon Conservation Area, Samuel Amanya, denied any sanctioned operation in the area on the day of the shooting. He stated that if a ranger is found guilty, they would face legal consequences.

Historical Context

Mount Elgon National Park has a history of conflicts between UWA rangers and the local community. These disputes are often over alleged encroachments and grazing rights, leading to violent encounters and fatalities on both sides.

I n conclusion , the death of Markos Kipsang is a tragic reminder of the ongoing tensions between the local communities and conservation authorities in Uganda. As investigations continue, the community calls for justice and a reevaluation of how such conflicts are managed.
