Stranded Pilgrims Seek Assistance After Uganda’s Martyr’s Day

Despite a peaceful conclusion to Uganda’s Martyr’s Day celebrations on June 3rd, several pilgrims remain stranded at both the Catholic and Anglican shrines in Namugongo. The event drew massive crowds, with over 2.5 million at the Catholic shrine and between 600,000 and 800,000 at the Anglican site.

Causes of the Predicament

The reasons for the pilgrims’ predicament vary. Some lost their bags containing travel funds, while others misplaced the vehicles meant for their return journey. Health issues have also emerged, adding another layer of concern for those still at the shrines.

Efforts to Assist Stranded Pilgrims

Father Vincent Lubega, the parish priest of Namugongo, is currently assessing the situation. He is collecting information to determine the exact number of stranded pilgrims and develop a solution to assist them. His efforts aim to provide much-needed support to those in distress.

Security and Order Maintenance

Ugandan police report a generally peaceful event with no major incidents. Spokesperson Fred Enanga credited the collaborative efforts of security agencies for maintaining order. However, petty theft did occur, with authorities apprehending 22 individuals suspected of stealing phones, handbags, and narcotics.

Missing Children

Another concern involves missing children. While most of the 38 reported missing have been reunited with their families, nine remain in police custody. This includes three girls and six boys, highlighting the need for increased vigilance during large gatherings.

In conclusion, Uganda’s Martyr’s Day celebrations were marked by peaceful proceedings but also by the challenges faced by many pilgrims. Efforts by Father Vincent Lubega and the security forces continue to provide support and maintain order. As these pilgrims seek assistance, the community’s collaborative spirit remains essential.
